Diani Beach accommodation ranges from all-inclusive resorts to self-catering apartments and private villas. This is how the coast is laid out, which area suits which kind of trip, and what to check before you book a Diani vacation rental — written by the team that runs stays on Beach Road.
Diani is one long strip of beach with Beach Road running parallel to it. Where you sleep mostly decides how much you walk and how quiet your evenings are.
The main stretch of Beach Road is Diani's centre of gravity: supermarkets, pharmacies, dive schools, casual cafés and the well-known beach bars are all within a short walk or a two-minute tuk-tuk. Accommodation here ranges from resorts to serviced apartments in small gated buildings with shared pools. Our three apartments — Bahari, Pwani and Tulia — sit on this stretch, 600 m from the sand.
Galu is the southern continuation of Diani: wider sand, fewer people and reliable wind that makes it Kenya's kitesurfing hub. It is more residential, so you will rely on tuk-tuks or a car for restaurants further north. Houses and villas with gardens are the typical rental here.
North of the Congo River mouth and south towards Kinondo you find the most residential parts of the coast — private villas behind gates, very little foot traffic and a strong sense of being off the tourist track. Best with a car, or if your host arranges transfers and groceries for you.
Ukunda is the town just inland from Diani, home to Ukunda Airstrip (UKA). Stays here are cheaper but not walkable to the beach, so factor in daily transport if you plan beach days.
One to three bedrooms, full kitchen, shared pool, usually in a small gated building with a local manager. Best value for 3+ night stays and the most common style of Diani vacation rental.
Three to five bedrooms, private garden or pool, sometimes staffed. Ideal for families or two couples travelling together, and often cheaper per person than booking multiple hotel rooms.
Daily service, on-site restaurants and activities. Convenient for one- or two-night stops, less flexible for longer stays and self-catering.

Bahari, Pwani and Tulia share a small gated building on Beach Road in central Diani, 600 m — about a five-minute walk — from the sand, with restaurants, a supermarket and dive centres in the same stretch. Cali Blossom Villa sits further south at Galu Beach, and Villa Samawati is by the Congo River.

Central Diani (along Beach Road, near Diani Shopping Centre) is the easiest first choice — you are walking distance from restaurants, supermarkets, dive centres and beach bars. Galu Beach, 10–15 minutes south, is quieter and wider, better for long walks and kitesurfing. Congo River and Kinondo are the calmest, most residential stretches, best if you want privacy and have a car or use tuk-tuks.
A vacation rental usually wins for stays of three nights or more, for families, and for anyone who wants a kitchen, separate bedrooms and space to cook or work. Hotels and all-inclusive resorts make more sense for very short stays or if you specifically want restaurants, entertainment and daily service on site. Renting direct also removes platform service fees.
Almost everything in Diani sits within a few hundred metres of the sand. Beachfront is lovely but pricier and often noisier; a short walk inland — our Beach Road apartments are 600 m from the beach, about a five-minute walk — typically gets you a better apartment, a pool and a quieter night for less money.
No. Tuk-tuks and boda-bodas run along Beach Road all day and are cheap. A car helps if you are staying in Kinondo or Congo River, or if you plan day trips to Shimba Hills or Wasini Island. Airport transfers from Ukunda (UKA) or Mombasa (MBA) can be arranged in advance.
December to March is hot, dry and the busiest period, so book early. July to October is dry with cooler evenings and good diving. The long rains fall around April and May, when many places are quieter and cheaper. Diani is warm year-round.
